The expansion of Wollongong Central is taking shape
If you’ve been in the Wollongong CBD in recent times you would have noticed the building and construction work going on around Keira and Crown Streets as the GPT group look to develop and expand Wollongong Central. Donning the hard hats, boots, safety glasses and fluoro vests, we got to be a part of a walk-around the new site just this week to see the work in progress and get an understanding, through mocked-up visuals, of what the centre will look like. And we have to say it will be nothing short of amazing. With a focus on allowing natural light through the building and state of the art but functional floor surfaces and ceilings, along with the atrium it will be a fabulous shopping experience. There’s a real food focus too with the fresh food hall on the lower ground level, an open and airy food court just above street level and then a whole new outward facing dining and café strip planned for Keira Street. Part of GPTs vision is to see a reinvigorated Wollongong CBD, particularly in relation to the local food and bar scene, which is currently happening, with new eateries and bars cropping up all the time – both around and beyond the Crown Street Mall. It’s all due to open in early spring and we can’t wait to see it once finished. We are also planning some new tour ideas for the Gong so we’ll keep you posted.
