The Daily Grind Coffee Co.
As owners of popular cafes and delis in the Blue Mountains and on the South Coast in Gerringong, John and Somprom Svinos had been roasting their own coffee for years. With their blends consistently pursued by locals and visitors wanting to take a taste of their coffee home, they decided to follow their passion and get brewing! In 2008, with Patrick Hoptman, they started the Daily Grind Coffee Co.

Master roaster John uses single origin, high altitude Arabica coffee beans sourced from around the globe for his original aromatic blends. And his passion for a great brew was rewarded after only six months when the Werri Beach Espresso won a bronze medal at Sydney’s Royal Coffee Show.

Blended and roasted in the seaside town of Gerringong, clients are located within a 100km radius of this village. This keeps production local, minimises the transport carbon footprint and ensures delivery of a fresh product. The Daily Grind Coffee Co also proudly carries the Rainforest Alliance Seal.

The Witch’s Kitchen
In 2002 Kirsten McHugh moved to a beautiful property in Foxground, a scenic valley north of Berry, with a desire to grow vegies and herbs. However she soon found that a south-facing hillside, with its big stands of rainforest trees, was too shady for many crops.

Following a year spent reading about the growing conditions of every plant she was remotely interested in, and on the advice of an agronomist friend, tea was determined as an ideal small-scale crop. This exciting discovery lead to the planting of the first tea garden in 2003, with some experimental harvesting in 2007 and 2009, and then a season long harvest in 2009/10.

Kirsten is intrigued by all things tea - the art, ornamentation, history and folklore that has centred on tea for hundreds of years. And she loves to drink it. All Witch’s Kitchen teas are made from leaves, flowers, fruit and berries that have been grown on the property, naturally and chemical-free.

Greengold Vegies
Located in Terara, about 3km east of Nowra, Greengold Vegies is the largest grower of seasonal fresh vegetables in the Shoalhaven. Proprietors and brothers, John and Robert Boyd manage the business on the 25 hectare property that has been in the family for over 100 years.

Their products are picked fresh and are available direct from the paddocks via their farmgate store and local markets. Each Monday and Thursday they also deliver their fresh produce to Sydney’s Flemington Markets and pick up other fresh fruit and vegetables to bring back for their loyal local customers.  So fresh, you’ve never tasted vegies like these!

South Coast Providores – Preserving the Shoalhaven

South-coast Providores

Carole Ruta and Ian Gray of South Coast Providores have a passion for food and wine that has spanned both their professional and personal lives for the past four decades.

After meeting in Melbourne, they moved to Sydney in 1990 and opened Champagne Charlie's Food and Wine Bar, which became famous for its Australian boutique wine selections – not to mention showcasing Carole's knack for matching food and wine. As a result she became one of the most sought-after wine industry event organisers and menu consultants in the state.

Just over eight years ago, Carole and Ian turned their passion for food into a range of jams and conserves which Carole makes in the traditional French style she learned during her early years as an au pair in France – and her voracious reading of recipe books!

Carole and Ian are particularly proud of their ‘local’ philosophy on food and source over 85% of their ingredients from local farmers and growers. The range at South Coast Providores not only includes jams, conserves and pickles, but also candied citron, biscotti, traditional and gluten free Christmas cakes and puddings, and will soon include weekend muesli and honey granola.

And, in keeping with their passion for all things local, Carole and Ian now host ‘Locavore Fridays’ at their Berry premises where they sell fresh, in season, locally grown fruit and vegetables – often picked the night before or that morning straight from the growers.
